Prague : One World Film Festival from 11 to 19 March 2009
Of course such a festival cannot be only meant to project and award works having a great artistic value, and indeed the association People in Need, which organises the event, asserts that One World uses documentary films, the best and most direct means of communication to describe reality, to inform people about the most urgent issues of world’s society, permitting them to widen their knowledge and understanding of these problems. The festival’s organisers have always held the following themes as very important: respect of human rights and personal freedom, integration of and peace between peoples, the scourge of war, hunger and poverty. One World deals with all these issues not only in documentaries, but also in a series of debates that are held after the projections and that permit visitors to look into these problems and to take part in the debate in an active way. In this way the event goes beyond the definition of film festival, and turns into a fertile ground for discussion. An evidence of the fact that One World is become very important in the field of human rights is given by the UNESCO special mention that it has been awarded in 2007 for its contribution to human rights and peace education.
The visitors that every year decide to travel to Prague to watch some interesting documentaries can choose among many films and different themes. There are three categories of films in competition, which will be judged by international juries: main competition, short forms competition, and the Right to Know category, which gives space to problems concerning human rights that are not well-known yet.
Besides the competition categories, this year there will be also the following thematic sections: Europe in (one) world, which will deal with the challenges Europe has to face, 20 Years of Democracy in Film, with documentaries realised in the last 20 years, after the fall of communism, Panorama, with films in which world’s questions mix with personal stories, Images of Africa, a section dedicated to documentaries realised by Africans or that deals with Africa, Czech Documentaries, One World for Children, with films fit for young people, Tribute to Ross McElwee, including 4 films realised by the famous American documentarist, and Special Showing, i.e. the projection, for the first time since the creation of the festival, of a long feature film, Zdenek Tyc’s El Paso.
If you plan a trip to Prague during the festival you will realise that Prague is not only beautiful, but also lively from a cultural point of view and socially engaged.
