The price paid for a change is sometimes quite expensive. Not infrequently the lives at stake just to realize the dream of change. The same risk also must be accepted by Dr. Sun Yat-sen, father of modernization in China.
To realize a dream of change, Dr. Sun Yat-sen would not want to deal with the Ching Dynasty when it was still in power. Because not want to rule the Ching dynasty ended because of the revolution initiated by Dr. Sun Yat-sen, professional killers were sent to destroy the lives of Dr. Sun Yat-sen.
The opportunity came when Dr. Sun Yat-sen had to come to Hong Kong to join forces in there. Only three blocks from where Dr.. Sun Yat-sen was, a group of assassins was prepared to run their job and nothing can stop this killer of hundreds of people but five bodyguards Dr. Sun Yat-sen who are ready to sacrifice their own lives to protect the hero.
The question is, Could Gambler (Donnie Yen), Tycoon (Xueqi Wang), Beggar (Leon Lai), a Revolutionary (Tony Leung Ka Fai), and Richshaw Man (Nicholas Tse) against the killers who are not few in number?
Do not get me wrong. BODYGUARDS AND Assassins is not a martial arts film as in most Hong Kong movies. There is a fight scene with unique choreography martial but it is not the main treat in the film that took the settings in Hong Kong early 1900s this. The drama actually got significant attention in the film by director Teddy Chen is.
When viewing a range of players who placed in this film, appeared impression that this film will only rely on big names of the star alone. In fact, it is not the most important. Big names that were chosen because of their reputation in the world of acting. Teddy Chen continued to work hard to make a spectacle for the eyes as well as for the soul.
Early half of this film is filled with character formation and positioning of each character in a historical framework and exploit the relationships between each character so that there is a strong unity between the stories with the characters in it. This is not an easy job because it divides the screen time so that all characters have the same exposure rations certainly not easy. The risk is if the character is not exposed enough viewers will not care what happens to these characters. Fortunately enough jelly Teddy Chen and each character can feel whole as a human being rather than merely two-dimensional figures only.
The second new section is filled with action of the protective action Dr. Sun Yat Sen as the father of the revolution of China to protect it from the murderers who attack messenger Ching dynasty. Again, Teddy Chen worked on this part so well that each and every scene look so charming. Coupled with a qualified CGI then Hong Kong view of the city a hundred years ago could well direplika.
