THE HURT LOCKER : Thin boundary between Courage and Foolishness

J.T. Sanborn (Anthony Mackie) and Owen Eldridge (Brian Geraghty) are two soldiers from the unit gegana team who served in Iraq in 2004. They both served to comb the area to pass the Americans to seek the possibility of mines planted by Iraqi troops.

The task of this team is not an easy task. Sanborn and Eldrige can not make the slightest mistake or the lives of other people who will become victims. That was evident when their boss was one of the victims in their mission to do. But awareness of the importance of accuracy that quickly became something that no longer needed when the team is getting new leadership.

Unlike the previous boss, Sergeant William James (Jeremy Renner) is a soldier who was 'not normal'. James always act according to military standards rules is an act of reckless and irresponsible. James does not like to use robots to disarm mines and would rather jump straight into a minefield and disarm him with my bare hands. As subordinates, Sanborn and Eldridge can not do nothing but follow orders from superiors.

With Mark Boal who had become a screenplay writer IN THE VALLEY OF elah Kathryn Bigelow, the director, trying to uncover the other side of the war with the film THE HURT LOCKER this. They both tried to see the war as something addictive and can make people addicted. On the other hand, Bigelow also showed that in conditions of war, sometimes initial motivation when left on the battlefield was no longer a problem. There was only one thing: survival.

Plot structure of this film requires a high concentration because there's hardly a clear plot. In fact, this sort of film is a collection of scenes that highlight the central figure in this film. There's no clear storyline. That there was a message tucked in between each scene is displayed by the 130-minute length movies this.

Bigelow also tried not siding with one faction fighting. He was just trying to describe the condition of the central characters of this movie without having to make this movie a psychological analysis. He was just describing the situation experienced by the characters at that time without having to retreat to the back and highlight the past of each character.

In essence, THE HURT LOCKER is not a casual entertainment. Action and combat action only because it had to be there and not a major scene. To call it a lack of entertainment was probably right. So if you do not really want to look more closely at what the soldiers endured while in the battlefield, could be another film would be more interesting to watch.
